About

Our Story

Shawls have been woven in Kashmir and Ladakh for hundreds of years and it is wonderful for us to be able to continue an old traditional handicraft and be able to make such soft shawls from natural fibres from Cashmere and Pashmina Goats. Cashmere and Pashmina are the fine undercoat fibres produced by Cashmere and Pashmina Goats (Cupra Hircus), animals that live in the mountainous region of Kashmir and Ladakh in the Indian Himalaya. Due to the extremely cold winters the Cashmere and Pashmina Goats have developed an undercoat of remarkably thin hair fibres, which act as an insulator and keep the animals warm in the icy cold temperatures of winter. The finely embroidered shawls with rich designs are the hallmark of Kashmiri craftsmanship.
Keeping with the traditional ways of weaving and embroidery, we at Cottage Emporium Leh have set new trends by including modern designs and yet keeping the authenticity of the old traditions.
